Men and women are learning to sew in Northwest Haiti.
WAVES OF MERCY - PORT-DE-PAIX Sewing Class
Our Port-de-Paix sewing class is already in its second year! In our first year, two Haitian teachers taught 10 students (7 men and 3 women) basic sewing techniques using treadle sewing machines. Known as foot-pump sewing machines, these sewing machines don't require electricity, which is perfect since Haiti's power is often spotty.
We currently have 6 students enrolled in our second year, advanced sewing class. These students (all men) are learning advanced sewing techniques, and they're already earning extra income for themselves by sewing school uniforms and making alterations.
NORTHWEST HAITI CHRISTIAN MISSION - MOLE ST. NICOLAS Sewing Class
In April 2016, we began a new partnership with Northwest Haiti Christian Mission's Mole St. Nicolas campus to start a new sewing class there.
The sewing class has one Haitian sewing teacher and 15 students, all of whom are women. The students are learning basic sewing techniques.
In addition to learning a trade that will allow them to provide for themselves and their families, they also desire to make an impact in their community by sewing clothes for orphans, and for people who can't afford nice church clothes.
